Appendix: about the South Centre
The South Centre, with headquarters in Geneva, is an intergovern-
mental organization and think tank of developing countries estab-
lished by an intergovernmental treaty that came into force on 31 July
1995. It currently has 50 Member Countries.
The Centre has grown out of the work and experience of the South
Commission and its follow-up mechanism, and from recognition of
the need for enhanced SouthSouth cooperation. The Report of the
South Commission emphasized that the South is not well organized
at the global level and has thus not been effective in mobilizing its
considerable combined expertise and experience, nor its bargaining
power.
The South Centre meets the need for analysis of development
problems and experience, and provides intellectual and policy
support required by developing countries for collective and individ-
ual action, particularly in the international arena. The Innovation,
Access to Knowledge and Intellectual Property Programme (IAKP)
is one of three major institutional pillars of the Centre. The mission
of the IAKP is to contribute to the development, coordinated use
and improvement of the capacity of developing countries and their
institutions to integrate the development dimension into their inno-
vation, access to knowledge and intellectual property policies.
The objective of the IAKP is to ensure that global, regional and
national rules facilitate the generation of knowledge, goods and
services in key areas such as health, industry and agriculture and that
such knowledge, goods and services are available and affordable for
all.
