Abstract/Description:
This chapter reviews the influence of EU climate and energy policies on the industrial sector. The EU has deployed a large number of instruments, including market-based ones such as the EU Emissions Trading System, command and control regulations or a gradual shift in EU funding rules and procurement procedures to promote low carbon solutions and spur ‘green’ business. Through reinforced investments in a low carbon economy and the strengthening of the EU ETS, the EU hopes to launch a virtuous circle of job generation, a reduction in energy costs over the long term, and thereby an increase in competitiveness, and the creation of a low carbon technology industry which is competitive on the world market.
