Abstract/Description:
This chapter analyses the cumulative effect of EU policies and regulatory decisions in the governance structures of European sport. It adopts a historical approach to describe the impact on sports governance of European Court rulings, European Commission competition decision and other Council and European Parliament documents. The chapter argues that EU decisions have contributed to a fundamental change in European sport’s systemic governance, where the power, legitimacy and authority of federations and governing bodies has been reduced. EU legal and policy decisions have contributed to reconfigure the so-called European Model of Sport. The chapter also looks at the importance of EU law and policy for setting good governance principles in the sports sector, a priority of the latest EU Work Programmes in the area of sport under Article 165 TFEU.
