Abstract/Description:

This chapter engages with the debate on the role of voluntary sustainability standards (VSS) in public procurement. The main argument is that they can play an important role in fostering compliance with human rights in global supply chains, but can only do that for a specific set of (labour) rights. The chapter first discusses how VSS currently feature in public procurement. Next the chapter focuses on how VSS operate and why they are potentially relevant instruments to implement the protection of human rights through supply chains. The third part focuses on the intersection of VSS and human rights in the context of public procurement.
