Editor(s): Martin-Ortega, Olga; Methven O’Brien, Claire
Publisher: Edward Elgar Publishing
Section: Chapter 9
Section Title: Outsourcing and bonded labour in military and diplomatic security services
Author(s): Sinclair, James
Number of pages: 14
Abstract/Description:
This chapter explores the nature and scope of bonded labour in the context of UK military and diplomatic outsourcing during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. It identifies some of the policy changes that have sought to address the problem and explores how and why the many positive political and legal developments have not translated into meaningful practical change. It concludes that there is lack of political will to engage in effective oversight of contractors and that as a result, workers deep in government funded supply chains are vulnerable to illegal and unethical exploitation.
