Acknowledgements
Many people have assisted me in the writing of this book and there is, of
course, a risk, that by mentioning some, I omit others. With apologies to those
in the latter category, I would especially like to thank the following.
During the writing of this book I have been both a Professor in the Law
School of Trinity College Dublin and, latterly, the University's Dean of
Graduate Studies. I owe a significant debt of gratitude to my colleagues in both
contexts who have been unrelentingly supportive and who make my working
life a joy. I would like also to acknowledge those students who have studied
Islamic Law with me over the last decade and whose thoughts have profoundly
informed mine.
Many colleagues have given very particular assistance in helping me
develop ideas and in reading and commenting on various drafts of chapters
of this book. I owe a huge debt of thanks to Dr Julien Sterck (University of
Essex), Professors William Binchy, Oran Doyle, David Kenny, Caoimhin
MacMaolain and Suryapatim Roy of Trinity College Dublin and Professor
Eoin Daly (NUI Galway) and Emeritus Professor Garret Barden (NUI Cork).
I am also hugely grateful to Sharon Smith and Sondos Sidiqqi for their inval-
uable insights.
I am very grateful to Edward Elgar Publishing for their kindness and pro-
fessionalism through the publication process. I would especially like to thank
Amber Watts, Barbara Pretty and Carolyn Fox for all their work and their
patience with me.
I acknowledge with ...
