The Parliament of Australia enacts:

1 Short title
5
This Act is the Competition and Consumer Amendment (Truth in
6
Labelling--Palm Oil) Act 2017.

2 Commencement
8
(1) Each provision of this Act specified in column 1 of the table
9
commences, or is taken to have commenced, in accordance with
10
Schedule 1 Amendments

Legislation that is specified in a Schedule to this Act is amended or

repealed as set out in the applicable items in the Schedule

concerned, and any other item in a Schedule to this Act has effect

according to its terms.

4 Purpose of Act
15
The purpose of this Act is to ensure that consumers have clear,
16
accurate information about the inclusion of palm oil in goods.

1 After section 134 of Schedule 2

Insert:

134A Information standard in relation to goods containing palm oil
6
(1) The Commonwealth Minister must, within 12 months after the
7
commencement of this section, make an information standard
8
under subsection 134(1) for goods containing palm oil.
9
(2) The Commonwealth Minister must ensure that an information
10
standard for goods containing palm oil is in force at all times after
11
the first one comes into force.
12
(3) The information standard must:
13
(a) apply in relation to goods manufactured on or after a date no
14
later than 12 months after the commencement of this section;
15
and
16
(b) apply in relation to goods supplied by way of retail sale; and
17
(c) require the provision of the information that the goods
18
contain palm oil, regardless of the amount of palm oil used in
19
the goods; and
20
(d) provide for the information to be provided on a label that:
21
(i) is on the goods; or
22
(ii) is on the package of the goods; or
23
(iii) accompanies the goods; or
24
(iv) is displayed in connection with the sale of the goods.
