2004-2005-2006 THE PARLIAMENT OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AGE DISCRIMINATION AMENDMENT BILL 2006 SUPPLEMENTARY EXPLANATORY MEMORANDUM Amendment to be Moved on Behalf of the Government (Circulated by authority of the Attorney-General, the Honourable Philip Ruddock MP) NOTES ON CLAUSES Amendment (1) 1. This amendment changes the last cell of the table at Item 15 of Schedule 1 to the Bill, which lists provisions of laws for which an exemption from the Age Discrimination Act 2004 is provided. 2. The Bill currently provides an exemption for Regulation 8.10 of the Workplace Regulations 2006. The amendment retains this and adds Regulations 9.1, 9.5 and 9.20. 3. Each of these regulations establishes a minimum age of 18 years for a person to undertake a particular role in workplace bargaining. Regulation 8.10 (already included in the Bill) relates to workplace bargaining agents. The additional regulations set a minimum age for: · agents for the purposes of initiating a bargaining period (Regulation 9.1) · agents for the purposes of applying for a secret ballot order (Regulation 9.5), and · scrutineers to oversee protected action ballots (Regulation 9.20) 4. Exempting these additional regulations, which are designed to be consistent with the generally accepted legal age of maturity, is consistent with the proposed exemption of Regulation 8.10.Index] [Search] [Download] [Bill] [Help]
