17. (1) The officer in charge of a detention centre may direct a detainee to
be employed in kinds of work that it is reasonable to expect the detainee to
perform.

(2) In directing a detainee to perform particular work, the officer in charge
of a detention centre shall take into account the religion and the mental and
physical capacity of the detainee.

(3) A detainee shall not be employed otherwise than for the benefit of the
Commonwealth.

(4) A detainee shall not be required to perform work on a Sunday, Christmas
day or Good Friday other than such work as is necessary for the continued
daily operation of the detention centre.
