1991--No. 82 PHARMACY ACT 1964--REGULATION
(Relating to qualifications for registration as a pharmacist)

HIS Excellency the Governor, with the advice of the Executive Council, and in pursuance of the Pharmacy Act 1964, has been pleased to make the Regulation set forth hereunder.

PETER COLLINS Minister for Health. Commencement 1. This Regulation commences on 22 February 1991. Amendment 2. The Pharmacy Regulations are amended by inserting after Regulation 30 the following Regulation: Period of work as assistant to pharmacist 30A. (1) This Regulation does not apply in respect of persons who have completed or commenced a course for a degree in pharmacy before the commencement of this Regulation. (2) For the purposes of section 13 (1) (b) of the Act, the prescribed period is: (a) 2,300 hours in the case of a person who has been awarded a pass degree in pharmacy; or (b) 1,000 hours in the case of a person who has been awarded an honours degree in pharmacy or who, in addition to having been awarded a degree in pharmacy, has been awarded a higher degree in pharmacy or a postgraduate diploma in pharmacy.

2 1991 - No. 82 (3) The hours referred to in clause (2) (a) are to be served after the completion of the course for the pass degree in pharmacy. However, not more than 300 hours may be served after the person has successfully completed the first academic year of the course. (4) The hours referred to in clause 2 (b) are to be served after the completion of the course for: (a) the honours degree in pharmacy; or (b) the higher degree in pharmacy or postgraduate diploma in pharmacy, as the case requires. (5) Of the hours referred to in clause (2): (a) not less than 35 hours or more than 40 hours are to be served in any one week; and (b) the minimum number of hours to be served in any one location is 150 hours.

EXPLANATORY NOTE As a consequence of amendments made to the Pharmacy Act 1964 in the Statute Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act (No. 2) 1990, the periods that a person is required to serve as an assistant to a pharmacist before the person is registered as a pharmacist under the Pharmacy Act 1964 are no longer to be prescribed by the Act. The periods that are currently required to be served are 12 months (for a pass degree) or 6 months (for honours or higher degree). The object of this Regulation is to amend the Pharmacy Regulations to prescribe the periods that a person is required to serve as an assistant. The new Regulation only applies to persons who begin a degree in pharmacy after the Regulation commences.
