1992--No. 595 TRAFFIC ACT 1909--REGULATION (Relating to the operation of 14.5 metre long buses) NEW SOUTH WALES [Published in Gazette No. 135 of I3 November 1992] HIS Excellency the Governor, with the advice of the Executive Council, and in pursuance of the Traffic Act 1909, has been pleased to make the Regulation set forth hereunder. WAL MURRAY, Minister for Roads. Commencement 1. This Regulation commences on 13th November, 1992. Amendments 2. Schedule F to the Motor Traffic Regulations 1935 is amended: (a) by omitting paragraph 44A and by inserting instead the following paragraph: 44A. Length of motor vehcles--general: (1) The length of a motor vehicle must not exceed 11 m. (2) The distance from the foremost extremity of the rear overhang of a motor vehicle to the foremost extremity of the vehicle must not exceed 8.3 m. (3) This paragraph does not apply to an articulated vehicle, an omnibus or a trailer. (b) by inserting after paragraph 44E the following paragraph: 44F. Length of omnibuses: (1) The length of an omnibus must not exceed 12.2 m. 2 1992--No. 595 (2) The distance from the foremost extremity of the rear overhang of an omnibus (other than an omnibus that was first registered before 1 January 1970) to the foremost extremity of the omnibus must not exceed 8.3 m plus the amount, if any, by which the length of the omnibus exceeds 11 m. by omitting paragraph 66 (1) (a2) and by inserting instead the following paragraph: (a2) an omnibus, the rear overhang must not exceed: (i) if the omnibus has a single axle towards the rear--60 per cent of the distance between the centre of the foremost axle and the foremost extremity of the rear overhang, or 3.2 m, whichever is the shorter length; or (ii) if the omnibus has a tandem axle towards the rear-- 3.7 m. by omitting from paragraph 66 (1) (b) (i) the words "or is an omnibus"; by inserting after paragraph 86O the following Part: PART 7 Exemptions 86OA. Dimensions of certain omnibuses: (1) The length of an omnibus may exceed 12.2 m (but may not exceed 14.5 m) if the omnibus is operated only on roads or in areas that have been assessed, and found to be suitable for the operation of an omnibus whose length lies within that range, in accordance with the guidelines set out in the document entitled "Provisional Guidelines for Assessment of Routes for Operation of 14.5 Metres Long Buses" published by the Authority (and available from the Authority on request). (2) The rear overhang of such an omnibus must not exceed 70 per cent of the distance between the centre of the foremost axle and the foremost extremity of the rear overhang, or 4.9 m, whichever is the shorter length. by inserting after paragraph 163 the following paragraph: 164. Dimensions of certain omnibuses: (1) The length of an omnibus may exceed 12.2 m (but may not exceed 14.5 m) if the omnibus is operated only on roads or in areas that have been assessed, and found to be suitable for the operation of an omnibus whose length lies within that range, in accordance with the (c) (d) (e) (f) 3 1992--No. 595 guidelines set out in the document entitled "Provisional Guidelines for Assessment of Routes for Operation of 14.5 Metres Long Buses" published by the Authority (and available from the Authority on request). (2) The rear overhang of such an omnibus must not exceed 70 per cent of the distance between the centre of the foremost axle and the foremost extremity of the rear overhang, or 4.9 m, whichever is the shorter length. EXPLANATORY NOTE Currently the maximum permitted length of a bus is generally 12.2 metres. This can be exceeded with the written permission of the Commissioner of Police. The object of this Regulation is to amend the Motor Traffic Regulations 1935 to permit 14.5 metre long buses to be driven on roads that have been assessed and found suitable for the operation of such buses in accordance with guidelines published by the Roads and Traffic Authority.
