CORRECTIONS AMENDMENT (PRISONER REMISSION) BILL 2018 BILL 15 OF 2018

                                          FACT SHEET
Corrections Amendment (Prisoner Remission) Bill 2018

The Corrections (Prisoner Remission) Amendment Bill 2018 (the Bill) makes a number of
amendments to the Corrections Act 1997 (the Act) and related legislation.
The Bill removes eligibility for remission of sentence for all offenders sentenced after the Bill
commences.
The Bill also clarifies the granting of remissions to individuals already sentenced. It provides that
remissions can be no more than three months of the total episode of sentenced imprisonment
(irrespective of the number of sentences) for any one prisoner, for all prisoners sentenced after
1 January 1994.
The regulation making powers in relation to mitigation or remission under the Corrections Act
1997 are also amended to include consideration of a prisoner’s participation in rehabilitative or
approved purposeful activities.
The Bill will also rename “special remissions” as “special management days”. “Special
management days” will not be affected by the changes to the remissions system.
