FACT SHEET POISONS AMENDMENT BILL (No. 2) 2009 The Poisons Amendment Bill (No. 2) 2009 amends the Poisons Act 1971. It inserts an enabling clause into the principal Act to permit carers to administer medication to persons under their care or responsibility who would otherwise be unable to administer the medication. The Bill provides that, despite the restrictions on the sale and supply of medicinal poisons, potent substances, restricted substances and narcotic substances in sections 26 and 47 of the principal Act, the regulations may enable some persons in some circumstances to administer certain substances on prescribed conditions. The Bill further addresses an anomaly with respect to the numbering of certain clauses within the principal Act.
