       Sentencing Amendment (Phasing Out of Suspended Sentences) Bill 2017


The Sentencing Amendment (Phasing Out Of Suspended Sentences) Bill 2017 makes a number
of amendments to the Sentencing Act 1997 and related legislation.

The Bill will amend the Sentencing Act 1997 by:

      providing for the new sentencing options of home detention orders and community
       correction orders;

      removing probation orders and community service orders as sentencing options;

      removing suspended sentences of imprisonment as a sentencing option for certain
       offences, except in exceptional circumstances; and

      removing the power, except in exceptional circumstances, to order an offender to remain
       on a suspended sentence of imprisonment, or have a suspended sentence imposed as a
       substituted sentence, where the offender has breached a condition of their suspended
       sentence.
